Si discute della visita di Menachem Begin leader di un Nuovo Partito in Palestina e delle finalità politiche del suo movimento.

            Tra i più sconvolgenti fenomeni politici del nostro tempo vi è l’emergere, nel nuovo Stato d’Israele, del Partito della Libertà (Tnuat Haberut), un partito politico completamente simile per organizzazione, metodi, filosofia politica e attrazione sociale ai partiti Nazista e Fascista. Tale partito è costituito dai membri e simpatizzanti del precedente Irgun Zvai Leumi, una organizzazione terroristica, di destra, sciovinista nella Palestina.

            La visita di Menachem Begin, leader di questo partito, in corso negli Stati Uniti è ovviamente pensata per dare l’impressione del sostegno americano a tale partito nelle imminenti elezioni in Israele, e per creare legami politici con elementi Sionisti conservatori negli Stati Uniti. Alcuni famosi cittadini americani  hanno prestato i loro nomi per dare il benvenuto a questa visita. Ciò è inconcepibile per coloro che si oppongono con determinazione al fascismo: tutti, se correttamente informati sui precedenti ed i progetti del Sig. Begin, non dovrebbero sommare i loro nomi ed il loro sostegno al movimento che egli rappresenta.

            Prima che sia fatto un danno irreparabile con contributi finanziari, manifestazioni pubbliche a favore di Begin e per la creazione in Palestina dell’impressione che un grande segmento di America sostiene elementi fascisti in Israele, l’opinione pubblica americana deve essere informata dei fini e degli obiettivi del Sig. Begin e del suo movimento.

            Le pubbliche dichiarazioni del partito di Begin non sono in grado di rendere conto della sua vera natura. Oggi esso parla di libertà, democrazia ed anti-imperialismo, mentre fino a poco fa predicava apertamente la dottrina di uno stato fascista. E’ nelle azioni che il partito terrorista tradisce il suo vero carattere; dalle sue azioni del passato possiamo giudicare cosa ci si può aspettare da esso in futuro.

ATTACCO AD UN VILLAGGIO ARABO

            Un esempio sconvolgente è il  comportamento dei suoi aderenti nel villaggio arabo di Deir Yassin. Questo villaggio, lontano dalle strade principali e circondato da territori ebrei, non ha preso parte alla guerra ed ha cacciato alcuni appartenenti a bande arabe che tentavano di usare il villaggio come loro base. Il 9 aprile (THE NEW YORK TIMES), bande terroriste hanno attaccato questo pacifico villaggio, che non era un obiettivo militare combattente, hanno ammazzato la maggior parte dei suoi abitanti – 240 uomini, donne e bambini – e ne hanno catturati alcuni per ostentarli come prigionieri nelle strade di Gerusalemme. La maggior parte delle comunità ebraiche provò orrore per tale azione e l’Agenzia Ebraica spedì un telegramma  di scuse al Re Abdullah della Trans-Giordania. Ma i terroristi, lungi dal vergognarsi delle loro azioni, furono fieri di questo massacro, lo pubblicizzarono ampiamente, ed invitarono tutti i corrispondenti stranieri presenti nella zona a vedere le cataste di cadaveri  e la completa distruzione di Deir Yassin.

            Gli avvenimenti di Deir Yassin esemplificano il carattere e le azioni del Partito della Libertà.

            All’interno della comunità ebraica essi hanno predicato un miscuglio di ultranazionalismo, misticismo religioso, e superiorità razziale. Come altri partiti fascisti sono stati usati per far fallire scioperi ed essi stessi hanno operato per distruggere le libere organizzazioni dei lavoratori. Al loro posto hanno proposto le corporazioni, sul modello del Fascismo italiano. Durante gli ultimi anni di sporadiche violenze anti-Britanniche, l’ IZL ed i gruppi Stern hanno inaugurato un regno di terrore nella comunità ebraica in Palestina.  Insegnanti sono malmenati se parlano contro di loro, adulti sono colpiti se non portano i figli  a loro. Con metodi da gangster, picchiando, fracassando vetrine ed utilizzando un vasto spettro di ruberie, i terroristi spaventano la popolazione e pretendono pesanti tributi. Gli aderenti al Partito della Libertà non hanno avuto alcuna parte nell’opera di costruzione in Palestina. Essi non hanno rivendicato alcuna terra, non hanno costruito alcuna colonia, si sono solo sottratti all’attività di difesa ebraica. I loro molto pubblicizzati tentativi di immigrazione sono poca cosa, e rivolti solamente a far entrare compatrioti fascisti.

DIFFERENZE EVIDENTI

            Le differenze tra le sfrontate dichiarazioni fatte ora da Begin ed il suo partito, ed i loro obiettivi e recenti comportamenti in Palestina portano il carattere di un non ordinario partito politico. Si tratta invece di un inequivocabile marchio di Partito Fascista per il quale terrorismo (contro ebrei, arabi ed anche britannici) e falsità sono gli strumenti per conseguire come obiettivo uno ‘Stato Leader’.

            Alla luce delle precedenti considerazioni è imperativo che la verità sul Sig. Begin ed il suo movimento sia conosciuta in questo Paese. Tra tutto il più tragico è che la massima leadership del sionismo americano si è rifiutato di fare una campagna contro le imprese di Begin o comunque di esporre ai propri appartenenti i danni che derivano ad Israele dall’appoggio a Begin. I sottoscritti quindi usano questa lettera per far conoscere al pubblico qualche fatto saliente riguardante Begin ed il suo partito e invitano tutti a non appoggiare quest’ultima manifestazione di Fascismo.

     New Palestine Party Visit of Menachem Begin and Aims of Political Movement Discussed

    TO THE EDITORS OF THE NEW YORK TIMES

     Among the most disturbing political phenomena of our times is the emergence in the newly created state of Israel of the “Freedom Party” (Tnuat Haberut), a political party closely akin inits  organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal  to the Nazi  and  Fascist parties.  It was  formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, rightwing, chauvinist organizaiton in Palestine.

     The current visit of Menachem Begin, leader of this party, to the United States is obviously calculated to give the ìmpression of American support for his party in the coming Israeli elections, and to cement political ties with conservative Zionist elements in the United States. Several Americans of national repute have lent their names to welcorne his. visit. It is inconceìvable that those who oppose fascism throughout: the world, if correcly informed as to Mr. Begin’s political record and perspectives, could add their names and support to the movement he represents.

     Before irreparable damage is done by way of financial contibutions, public manifesfations in Begin’s behalf and the creation in Palestine of the impression that a large segment of America supports Fascist elements in Israel, the
American public must be informed as to the record and objectives of Mr. Begin and his movement.

     The public avowals of Begin’s party are no guide whatever to its actual character. Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism, whereas until recently they opcnly preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do in the future.

     ATTACK ON ARAB VILLAGE

     A shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin. This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had taken  no part in the war, and had even fought off Arab bands who wanted to use the village as their base. On April 9 (THE NEW YORK TIMES), terrorist bands attacked this peacefal village, which was not a military objective in the fighting, killed most of its inhabitants — 240 men, wornen, and children —- and kept a few of them alive to parade as captives tbrough the streets of Jerusalem. Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the Jewish Agency sent a telegram of apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan. But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of this massacre, publicized it wideiy, and invited all the foreign correspondents present in the country to view the heaped corpses and the generai havoc at Deir Yassin.

   The Deir Yassim incident exemplifies the character and actions of the Freedom Party.

   Within  the  Jewìsh  community  they  have  preached  an  admixture  of ultranationalism, religious mysticism, and raciaì superionty. Like other Fascist parties they have been used to break strikes, and have themselves pressed for the destuction of free trade unions. In their stead they have proposed corporate unions on the Italian. Fascist model. During the last years of sporadic anti-British violence, the IZL and Stern groups inaugurated a reign of terror in the Palestine Jewìsh community. Teachers were beaten up for speaking against them, adults were shot for not letting their children join them. By gangster methods, beatings, window-smashing, and wide spread robberies, the terrorists intimidated the population and exacted a heavy tribute. The people of the Freedom Party have had no part in the constructive achievements in Palestine. They have reclaimed no land, built no settlements, and only detractced from the Jewìsh defense activity. Their much-publicized immigration endeavors were minute, and devoted mainly to bringing in Fascist compatriots.

   DISCREPANCIES SEEN

    The discrepancies between the bold claims now being made by Begin and his party, and their record of past perfomance in Palestine bear the imprint of no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and misrepresentation are means, and a “Leader State” in the goal.

    In te light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known this country. It is all the more tragic that the top leadership of American Zionism has refused to campaign
against Begin’s efforts, or even to expose to its own constituents the dangers to Israel from support to Begin. The undersigned therefore take this means of publiclv presenting a few salient facts concerning Begin and his party; and of
urging all concerned not to support this latest manifestation of fascism.
